MET Gala 2019: the camp style

The Met Fifth Avenue was all about flashes, cameras and famous people dressed up with a little bit strange and eccentric style.

The Met Gala: is about a annual event in which funds are raised to The Costume Institute Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. The event was co-chaired by Lady Gaga, Serena Williams, Anna Wintour and Harry Styles.

The Met Gala is back. ‘Camp’ by Susan Sontag, -explained in her essay ‘Notes on Camp’-, was the style chosen for the famous red carpet. This time, it was a complicated style to catch, in comparison with last year’s theme: ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’.

«Camp is art that proposes itself seriously, but cannot be taken altogether seriously because it is ‘too much'» -Susan Sontag, Notes on Camp, 1964.

The ‘too much’ term that Sontag uses to refer to camp is the first that celebrities captured. The excess, extravagance, all that is a little too much but not as much as to became bizarre, was one of the features of what has been seen last night. A clear example was Katy Perry in a chandelier suit, with lit candles and crystals here and there.

Others were more reckless and take this proposal from another side, as the Thirthy Seconds To Mars singer, who show up in the gala with himself wearing Gucci.

Jared Leto posed next to his own head, even recreate the Shakespeare ‘to be or not to be’ pose, replacing the skull for his head. Does that has some subliminal message? We don’t know but, he was without a doubt one of the night’s favourites.

The ‘to camp’, when camp became a verb, is a way of seduction for Susan.

«One which employes a flamboyant mannerisms susceptible of a double interpretation, (…) Equally and by extension, when the word becomes a noun, when a person or a thing is ‘a camp’ a duplicity is involved. Behind the «straight» public sense in wich something can be taken, one has found a private zany experience of the thing», wrote Sontag.

One of the stars of the night had been Harry Styles besides Alessandro Michelle, both dressed in Gucci and looking amazing. Styles wore a blouse with a lot of translucence, and black high waisted trousers. He completed his black outfit with rings, earrings, and high heeled bots. The final touch were his nails painted in black and turquoise.

The ex One Direction member, seemed very comfortable in that outfit and let clear that he doesn’t care about what others think of him. Even so, in an interview with Vogue, journalist Liza Chosy comments: «We got some nails tonight», pointing out the fact that they were painted and Harry answered: «Yeah, we always have nails», not caring about his nails being painted at all.

The best couples of the night

If you are a Riverdale fan, then for sure you have been waiting for Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse to walk the carpet. This two are a couple in fiction and in real life as well and they did not walk without being unseen. Lili and Cole wore outfits as if they came out of a Dr. Zeuss world or the Capitole of The Hunger Games.

Another very expected couple was the one of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. This is their first appearence in the MET Gala as wife and husband. The Jonas Brothers singer wrote in his Instagram: ‘Little I knew that this incredible women turned out to be my bride’, next to a photo posing together in the MET 2017.
